The Smurfette Principle

You know what I'm tired of? I'm tired of seeing only one women in a movie cast of all men. Movie producers, directors, and writers alike attempt to acknowledge so-called "gender equality" and create "women-inclusive" movies by throwing in one woman (and in many Hollywood blockbusters, this woman is neither the lead, nor does she have any substantial depth). Are you kidding me? One woman? The world's population is half women (and different versions of "woman"), and you're telling me that one woman is enough? And that she can stand for all women?

Men are the default, the norm, and what are women? The sidekicks, the duplicates, as Feminist Frequency states below. Further, the women that are cast in Hollywood movies, for instance, are most-often white, as are the men. So not only are men the standard to which all is measured, but white men (and white women) are as well.

Summer Fun and Staple # 2

The day has finally arrived! All I have to do is finish my work day and then I'm off to the cottage! 

These photos are from Friday night, when I had a blast hanging out with my friend Janis. We drank wine, chatted, and snacked away on her balcony until the fog rolled in.

Not a huge fan of this outfit, I was looking for something comfortable and I just threw it on quickly before leaving. However, I have been wearing this crop-top out lately! It's definitely my summer staple # 2!

OBSESSED.

I am obsessed with these KG by Kurt Geiger ankle boots from ASOS. Probably a little out of my budget ... so I need to find something similar asap! Aren't they perfect for Fall?

Happy Friday! I'm off to work all weekend, but at least starting on Sunday night I will be able to reunite and relax with my parents and Jimmy for almost two weeks at two different cottages on the water! Photos from our vacay to come!

Lipstick Love

Last night I tried to experiment with different lipsticks, although the deep purple shade I used doesn't show up nearly as strongly in these photos as it does in person. I couldn't resist trying on a new lipstick after Katherine (L) tried French braids on me. Lipsticks, and French braids, are my favorites, but it seriously aggravates me when lipstick doesn't stay on long, especially while drinking coffee and eating. UGH! Any suggestions?

All this picture-taking of myself feels very narcissistic, and given that this is also a feminist blog, I thought I'd address the issue at hand--why not? I have come to the conclusion that I feel this way because a) I am narcissistic and b) I at least partially blame this on the society within which I was raised. Many girls, such as myself, are taught to base much of their value on their appearances (but of course not too much, since narcissism is frowned upon. Seriously, who wants to be the eccentric older woman with a bad fake tan and bright blue eye shadow?). The double-bind that girls and their appearances find themselves in makes sense given that we live in a consumerist and body-obsessed society. But what about those who find themselves outside of culturally constructed body-image and appearance norms and ideals? What do they experience?

Though I see no harm in indulging myself in my appearance, I am also very aware that indulging too much is socially unacceptable. So, negotiating that is ... uncomfortable?

Summer Staple # 1: Floral Skirt

These photos were taken in my apartment. Many of the photos taken did not turn out, so this a very small selection. I would usually wear this type of outfit at night, as the sheer black top isn't always the best choice for summer days.
